Portugal doubles car recycling rates in a year
23/10/2007 (MY ENDS)
Portugal has doubled its car recycling rates over the past twelve months, according to new figures from vehicle recycling industry organisation Valorcar. Twice as many end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) had passed through Portugal's 34 authorised treatment facilities by September this year compared with the first nine months of 2006, it said. Valorcar members received 28,392 ELVs up to 1 October compared with 14,241 in the same period in 2006. This lower figure had itself been a big improvement on the previous year. Valorcar puts the improvement down to three main drivers: a new car tax introduced in July, which car owners must pay until they present a certificate proving that the vehicle has been disposed of properly; simplified incentives for replacing old vehicles; and tighter application of existing regulations by Portuguese authorities.
Follow-up: See Valorcar and Portuguese ELV statistics .
