Eu Parliament calls for total ban on waste dumping

The European parliament adopted a resolution on Tuesday on the EU thematic strategy on waste recycling tabled in 2005. MEPs called for a ban on landfilling all recyclable waste by 2020, extending to "all residual waste" except where unavoidable by 2025. Ireland Introduces First Plastic Bottle Auto Sort Facility

Irish Polymers of Crumlin, Northern Ireland has opened the first fully automatic sort facility for post consumer plastic bottles in Ireland representing an investment of 1.5 million Euros. Up until this point used plastic bottles collected throughout Ireland for recycling were simply baled and exported Through the new sorting plant in Northern Ireland, this material is being automatically sorted into various polymer types using German technology in the new 20,000 sq ft factory in Crumlin. Irish Polymers plans to process around 10,000 metric tons of mixed plastic bottles within the next twelve months. This material will be collected from the North and South of Ireland and represents about 60 percent of what is collected totally on island.

Reducing waste: set targets and less landfill, say reports debated Monday

As the amount of household and industrial waste increases in Europe, MEPs will debate two reports on the issue Monday. They call for more recycling, prevention of waste and a reduction in landfill usage. Currently 49% of municipal waste is sent to landfill sites while 33% recycled or composted. Across the EU, 3.5 tonnes of waste is produced per person per year. Both reports will be debated Monday after 1700 and voted on Tuesday...

UK Agency releases guidance for waste pretreatment

European Firms Establish JV for E-Scrap Recycling in Czech Republic

Stena Metall, a Sweden-based recycling company, and Safina, a Czech-based precious metal manufacturer and recycler, have formed a joint-venture called Stena/Safina in the Czech Republic. The JV will focus its energies on electronics recycling that is based on Europe’s Waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment directive.


RRFB Nova Scotia Selects Lafarge Canada to Collect and Process Used Tires

RRFB Nova Scotia has selected Lafarge Canada and its partner Systech Environmental to collect and process the over 900,000vscrap tires generated in the province each year. Lafarge will use the scrap tires as an alternate fuel source at its cement kiln in Brookfield, NS. The company expects to use 60 percent of the total tires collected from across the province at the facility; with the remaining tires transported to a Lafarge cement kiln in Quebec where they will be used as fuel. Lafarge Canada will be responsible for all collection, transport and processing of Nova Scotia’s used tires for the next five years.

Ecological porous pipes for irrigation systems using rubber waste
A Polish research institute has developed a new type of porous pipes (hoses) that allows controlled release of water, to be used in irrigation systems. The pipes are made of recycled raw materials: polyolefins and vulcanised rubber waste from tyres. Developed solution is an ecological and money-saving irrigation and fertigation system that can be used in agriculture as well as in maintenance of recreation areas. The institute is looking for partners interested in implementing this technology.

New technology of land reclamation on the basis of derivates from recycling of communal waste
A Polish company developed new technology based on exploiting the segregated fraction of useless communal waste - fibrous of vegetable and animal origin (textiles, wet untransferable papers and cardboard packages) and organic materials unfit to traditional recycling, because of excessively fraction dividedness or adiposity. The firm is looking for partnership in areas of waste management, garbage disposals or land reclamation.

Low-cost technology to produce high-grade ethanol from agricultural and forest wastes
A Czech inventor has developed a technology for high-grade ethanol production based on a patented technology processing lignocellulose biomass originated from agricultural and forest waste (straw, wood chips, sorell, etc.). The technology also provides commercially utilisable products such as lignin, furfural, furan and acids (acetic and formic), and generates an extremely low amount of unobjectionable waste. Prospects interested in buying, installation and running the technology are sought.

Recovery and valorisation as feed of cheese whey
An Italian public research company has performed a research activity based on thermal concentration of cheese whey, to obtain a product with a good nutritional value, stable and easily deliverable to cattle. The process for whey treatment is performed in a small mobile plant, cheap and easy to manage even by non-specialised workers. This technology allows to recover nutrients and save energy and water by means of a simple treatment. Cheese production factories are being sought.
