England mulls ban on recyclable waste dumping
25/05/2007 (ENDS Europe)
The UK could follow the example set by some other European countries and ban landfilling of recyclable or biodegradable waste, the government said on Thursday. A revised strategy for reducing waste in England includes a promise to consult on the issue. The strategy also sets a series of new 2020 targets for better waste management in England. They include 50 per cent recycling of household waste, 75 per cent recovery of municipal waste, and a new target to nearly halve the absolute amount of residual household waste compared with its level in 2000. ..

French Firm Acquires UK Scrap Recycler
24/05/2007 (recyclingtoday.com)
Metal-recycling business Easco has new French owners after being snapped up in a multi-million-pound deal. Waste management company Sita - part of large French industrial and services group Suez - has purchased Easco for an undisclosed sum. Easco, which opened in 1984, employs about 300 people and has 13 recycling sites in the United Kingdom. The business, which until now was part of the Serruys family's SPC empire, has more than doubled its turnover in the past three years to about £90m (US$178.4 million), and last year handled 512,000 metric tons of ferrous and non-ferrous metals...

Serbia - Hospital Waste
24/05/2007 (KNOTEN WEIMAR)
Since October 2000 and the end of the civil war, the country has been trying to get back on financial track. Great hope is placed on the entrance to the EU and the country is working on meeting the standards required. The European Agency for Reconstruction (EAR) is supporting a project with the National CARDS Programme, that should implement a sustainable system for the collection, storage, treatment and disposal of medical waste.
Columbia - E-waste
24/05/2007 (KNOTEN WEIMAR)
A national and international exchange of experiences regarding the management of electronic-waste took place in April in Columbia for the first time. It was supported by the Columbian Ministry of Environment, Treasury and Land Management (MAVDT) and the Association of the Colombian Mobile Phone Industry (ASOCEL), amongst others. Since January, researchers have been undertaking a case study about current disposal and recycling trends in the cities of Bogota and Medellin.
China - Research for Recycling.
24/05/2007 (KNOTEN WEIMAR)
China produces four million tons of polyester per year, especially for the production of drinking bottles. The waste is predominantly not being recycled. Scientists from East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST) have developed a process that changes this plastic waste into a corrosion-proof substances. Environment and business will profit from this, because early estimates show a 70% reduction of the expenditures made by China for the creation of anti-corrosion materials from primary raw materials. An important field for the application of these new resins will be containers and pipes to hold and transport corrosive liquids such as acid in chemical and industrial factories.
Europe - Valuable Materials from Battery-Recycling
18/05/2007 (KNOTEN WEIMAR)
Starting in 2008, the EU Regulation 2006/66/EC will be in force, which expressly pertains to all commercially available batteries, rechargeable or not. One new aspect of the regulation is the requirement that a concrete percentage of the components must be recycled. Since 1998 it has been forbidden in Germany to dispose of batteries via household trash. Manufacturers and importers are required to dispose of their products for free, and to this end they founded a collection system with gathering points. The largest in Germany and in Europe is the common collection system GRS BATTERIEN with over 800 contractually bound parties. In 2006 it was able to gather 13,000 tons of old batteries, from which almost 90% were recycled so that more than 6,200 tons of zinc, iron, manganese and other (Heavy-) Metals could be reclaimed and brought back to the market.
