Poland plots waste car law changes
06/06/2007 (ENDS Europe)
The Polish parliament looks set to approve changes to the country's end-of-life vehicles legislation. A proposal tabled by MPs from the ruling Law and Justice party would scrap an "unjust" system of fines imposed on car producers that fail to develop a network of waste car collection points covering the entire country. The bill's proponents say the current system penalises firms equally irrespective of the size of network they have created. In its place would be a variable scale of fines depending on the size of the network...

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) put the possibility forward in a document published after a stakeholders meeting on May 10. The producer responsibility system is likely to form the basis of draft regulations for battery recycling this autumn. Defra has proposed a producer responsibility system for battery recycling. This will help the UK meet the requirements of the European Battery Directive from next year, which requires that the UK recycles 25% of household batteries by 2012...

BIR Spring Convention: Confidentiality is Plastics Concern
01/06/2007 (recyclingtoday.com)
Problems that could arise for exporters as a result of the revision of EU Shipment Regulations came under scrutiny at the BIR Plastics Committee meeting, which took place at the 2007 BIR Spring Convention in Athens May 21-23. Past Chairman Peter Daalder of Dutch company Daly Plastics BV remarked that, starting this July, EU shipments of materials designated as waste were required to be accompanied by a form which effectively revealed the name of suppliers to the customer. Business owners would therefore suffer potentially adverse consequences of this loss of confidentiality, he suggested...

The revised regulation, which will be applied as of 12th July 2007, affects trade in recyclables within the EU, exports from the EU to countries in the rest of the world, and imports of recyclables into the EU. During the commodity sessions of the recent World Recycling Convention of the Bureau of International Recycling in Athens, delegates were concerned by this regulation...

29/05/2007 (letsrecycle.com)

Utilisation of low-cost adsorbents for removal of heavy metals
A Greek technological company has developed an innovative technology for the utilisation of fly ash shaped into pellets as a potential adsorbent for the removal of heavy metals from wastewater. It's an efficient and simple stabilisation process of the utilised adsorbents, guaranteeing their safe disposal in industrial landfills and eliminating the risk of polluting groundwater. The company now seeks partners for technical co-operation, license or those interested in purchasing the know-how.
