The double-punch effect of this technology comes from the fact that it vaporizes organic material, releasing a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, which can be synthesized to create other gasses and chemicals. To be used as fuel, the synthesized gas would be converted to ethanol and methanol. The originators of this technology are the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Batelle Pacific Northwest National Labs of Richland, Wash. The technology is now being commercialized by a spin-off of PNNL named Integrated Environmental Technologies, also from Richland, that already works in the waste-to-energy business. ------------------------------ 30/01/2007 Nova Scotia chooses cement kiln for tires http://www.solidwastemag.com/issues/isarticle.asp?id=64788 Source: solidwastemag.com Nova Scotia's Resource Recovery Fund Board, a non-profit organization which is responsible for solid-waste management in that province, has approved plans by Lafarge Canada Inc. to burn scrap tires as an alternative fuel in its cement plant in Brookfield, N.S. The plan envisages that 31 per cent of municipal waste will be burned by 2016, compared with 9 per cent in 2003. There is currently only one municipal waste incinerator in Finland. Several more will need to be built. The 2015 targets were set in the 2000 end-of-life vehicles (ELV) directive, subject to confirmation by MEPs and governments based on a report by the commission. One large problem in cities is that water is consumed from small plastic sachets that are sold on the streets. There is an effort to get the approximately1500 plastic drink bag producers to contribute to the costs of removing the waste. For techincal reasons, of the 1800 tons of waste that arise daily in the city Accra, only 1500 tons can be removed. Since the homeowners must order and pay for the disposal of the waste, many prefer to burn it, which leads to high levels of dioxin impact. ------------------------------ 24/01/2007 Denmark launches "visionary" green energy plan http://www.endseuropedaily.com Source: endseuropedaily.com The Danish government has published what it describes as "an ambitious and visionary" energy strategy aimed at cutting fossil fuel consumption by up to 15 percent and doubling energy supply from renewable sources to 30 per cent of the total by 2025. ------------------------------ 21/01/2007 California: New E-Scrap Recycler Opens http://www.recyclingtoday.com/News/news.asp?Id=10853 Source: recyclingtoday.com E-World Recyclers, a new electronic scrap recycling company has opened in Vista, Calif. The targets are environmentally and economically optimal, it concludes, and should be retained to drive eco-innovation. The targets were set in the end-of-life vehicles (ELV) directive, adopted in 2000.
