Ireland: IBEC welcomes increase in WEEE recycling
20/07/2006 (ibec.ie)
The business and employers group IBEC welcomed the statement from the Minister for Environment, Heritage and Local Government showing a five fold increase in the recycling of electrical and electronic goods since the scheme came into force in August 2005. Head of IBEC Environment Unit Donal Buckley said: ‘Two million items were collected and recycled between August 2005 and May 2006 by the two authorised producer compliance schemes, WEEE Ireland and ERP Ireland. This is the equivalent of five kettles for every man, woman and child in the country. Current recycling rates of old electrical items (on a per capita basis in Ireland) is 6.7 kg – well in excess of the 4kg target set by the EU in the WEEE Directive but below the 15kg - 25kg produced by each person annually.

Old tyres banned from landfill
17/07/2006 (edie.net)
As of Sunday, July 16, used tyres can no longer be landfilled, meaning a boost to the already healthy market for recycling the rubber. Old tyres are now banned from landfill. The new rules come as part of the EU's Landfill Directive, which will see a ban on dumping used tyres across the whole of the union. Whole tyres have been banned from landfill since 2003 but now it is no longer legal to shred and dump.

Recycled tires are being used to repave some streets and sidewalks in Los Angeles County with funding from the California Integrated Waste Management (CIWMB)-approved Targeted Rubberized Asphalt Concrete Incentive Grants, according to a report in the Whittier Daily News (Whittier, Calif.). According to the report, 20 grants totaling more than $3.1 million have been allocated since January to local governments in Fresno and L.A. counties. The new roads save up to $20,000 per lane mile and use up more than 2,000 scrap tires over the same distance, according to the report

Switzerland moves towards PET bottle tax
12/07/2006 (endseuropedaily.com)
Switzerland’s environment agency is to start drafting a tax on PET drinks bottles, it announced on Monday. The "prepaid disposal charge" will be implemented unless industry can overcome financing problems. Some 15% of the retail market is still outside the main voluntary collection system, thus depressing recycling rates and raising costs. The agency announced its intention despite reporting that PET bottle recycling finally reached a legal target of 75% in 2005. The target continued to be easily exceeded by glass bottles (95%) and aluminium cans (90%).

'Green' incineration claims misleading
07/07/2006 (Friends of the Earth)
The independent study, conducted for Friends of the Earth, shows that: 1- waste incinerators that generate electricity emit a third more greenhouse gases for the electricity they produce than gas fired power stations [3]. 2-The situation will get worse in the future, as power generation from gas (and even coal) becomes more efficient, whilst carbon dioxide emissions from incinerators are predicted to increase due to a higher percentage of fossil-fuel containing plastics in the waste they burn.
