03/12/2006
(letsrecycle.com)
New categories for waste electronics - including a separate one for
fridges - will be included in the regulations to implement the WEEE
Directive in the UK.
The regulations are expected to be laid before Parliament on 12
December 2006, a date targeted by the Department of Trade and
Industry. This would allow for a statutory three week period in
Parliament with the regulations then going live on 2 January 2007,
with the WEEE regime operating from 1 July next year.

South Africa - E-waste
29/11/2006
(Knoten Weimar)
Johannesburg now is introducing collection points for discarded
electronic and electrical equipment. Two recycling companies
professionally dispose of the devices that are turned in
free-of-charge by firms and private individuals. World-wide the use
of electric and electronic equipment is growing. In 2004 more than
180 million PCs were sold, around 100 million old PCs wound up in
waste. In the western countries e-waste accounts for eight percent of
municipal waste. The Basel and Bamako Conventions banned all imports
of e-waste to Africa.
UK: Defra publishes waste stats

Statistics gathered from local authorities all over the country have
been released by Defra to show how municipal waste is being managed.
The estimates look at municipal waste from 2005/06 and overall
arisings have fallen by 3%.
Recycling rates have increased nationwide, and regional variations

East of England, East Midlands and the South West topping the
recycling chart.
The full statistics can be found on the Defra Website.
Spanish producers "shirking electroscrap costs"
25/11/2006
(endseuropedaily.com)
Only ten per cent of Spanish electronic and electrical goods producers
are contributing to equipment recycling costs as required of them
under EU electroscrap legislation, according to national recycling
collective Ecolec.
Ten months after a deadline to sign up to an industry ministry
registry established under the waste electrical and electronic
equipment (WEEE) directive, an estimated 90 per cent of producers,
representing a fifth of the market, have yet to do so, Ecolec said.
The ministry assigns recycling costs to producers. Ecolec estimates
the unregistered firms owe €15m in arrears...

Plants for processing various wastes into homogenous particles and alternative fuel
A Polish SME designs complex waste-processing plants. The proposed technology meets all the EU recommendations and standards related to environment protection, especially limitation of wastes storage up to 30% (in 2015). The designed plants are ideal for processing municipal wastes, industrial wastes and demolition wastes. The process is monophasic without additional granulation. The SME is opting for manufacturing agreement or commercial agreement with technical assistance.
