China - Germany - Biogas Utilisation

The Delegation of the German Industry and Commerce in Beijing (GIC) in
co-operation with the Deutsche Energie-Agentur (DENA) organised a
business trip programme and conference for German firms to Beijing
(11.-15.12.). Chinese and German professionals from administration,
industry and research lectured on the topic Biogas production from
agricultural and municipal wastes in China. Both CIM experts
Heinz-Peter Mang and Professor Dr. Bernhard Raninger (KNOTEN WEIMAR
partner for China) presented the current situation of biogas
utilisation in China. Thirteen German firms, among them also KNOTEN
WEIMAR, presented themselves and discussed with interested Chinese
parties. Furthermore, there was the opportunity to visit a pig farm
with biogas utilisation. Most of the around 200 participants came
from China

UK announces imminent WEEE implementation

The British government has published regulations implementing the EU’s
electroscrap – or WEEE - directive into national law. The rules are
expected to gain parliamentary approval this month and enter force on
1 January. The UK is the last EU member state to transpose the
directive, which was adopted in 2002...

UK "should warm to waste burning"

British MEP Caroline Jackson has called on UK local authorities to
embrace waste incineration with energy recovery alongside recycling
to help divert waste from landfills. British politicians "lack
courage" and have "allowed green fundamentalists to demonise
incineration and spread misinformation", she writes in a new
pamphlet. Ms Jackson is currently the European parliament’s
draftsman on proposals to revise EU waste law, a controversial
element of which concerns waste incinerators.

North America: RMA Ranks States on Tire Recycling Efforts

A report by the Rubber Manufacturers Association finds that nearly 87
percent of disposed tires each year are put to a new use, compared to
11 percent recovery rate in 1990.
Additionally, the number of tires sitting in stockpiles declined to
188 million from 275 million in 2003. More than 1 billion scrap tires
were stockpiled in 1990.
RMA also ranked states by their overall performance in dealing with
scrap tire issues and how states improved since the previous scrap
tire report in 2003.

North America: PET Collection Continues to Climb

Recent figures from the National Association for PET Container
Resources and the Association of Postconsumer Plastic Recyclers show
that PET recycling rates reached 23.1 percent last year. The total
collected amount was 1.170 billion pounds of PET containers collected
in 2005.
The figures for the year were an improvement from the previous year’s
collection rate of 21.6 percent. The report also noted that the volume
of PET containers available for domestic recycling purposes increased
by 9.4 percent to 5.075 million pounds.

Ukraine Considering Lifting Ban on Exports of Alloyed Metal Scrap

According to Interfax, Ukraine's parliament has given preliminary
approval to a bill that would lift the ban on exports of alloyed
metal scrap.
The bill, governing export duties on scrap alloyed ferrous metals,
scrap nonferrous metals and semi-manufacturers that use them,
proposes to lift the ban on exports of these products; imposing an
export duty of 30 euros per metric ton in the first year that the
bill is in effect. The duty would be gradually reduced to 15 euros
per metric ton over the next five years.
The duties would be introduced when Ukraine joins the World Trade
Organization

Parties to the UN Basel convention agreed new measures to control
hazardous waste dumping and initiatives to tackle growing volumes of
electronic waste at a meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, last week.
The eighth conference of parties was overshadowed by a toxic dumping
scandal in the Ivory Coast several months ago, which has also
galvanised the EU into introducing new controls...

Ceramic pigments made of industrial residues
A Portuguese University has developed a process of synthesis of ceramic pigments, by reaction to a solid condition, from industrial residues: sludge from industrial wastewater treatment units of industries for treatment of metallic surfaces (ex.: anodising and galvanization processes), foundry sands and wastes generated in the cutting and polishing operations of natural stones. The University is seeking licensees for the industrial scale-up.

Unique tyre shredding technology for the separation of rubber and steel wire in a “single pass”
A UK company has developed a unique shredding technology reducing whole passenger & 4x4 tyres to a 20mm rubber chip that is virtually wire-free. The system is “single pass” whereby the entire process is conducted on one machine leaving wire-free rubber chip and clean steel wire with only 5-9% rubber contamination. The developer is seeking partnerships for commercial agreements with technical assistance.

Solvent and spent acid recovery using innovative membrane technology
An Israeli SME has developed a novel solution for solvent recovery using an innovative pervaporation membrane in hollow fiber configuration which greatly improves the economics of solvent recovery and provides an efficient, cost effective and environmentally friendly solution. The unique membranes can also be used for the recovery of spent acids by diffusion dialysis. Manufacturers or service providers of solvent/ spent acid treatment units are sought for cooperation.

PET (polyethylene terephthalate) Bottle Recycling System
A Turkish SME has developed a PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottle recycling system for producing raw fibrous material. Raw fibrous materials are required for used in sectors across the world. As well as producing a valuable product the project benefits the environment by recycling existing materials. The company is seeking a commercial agreement with technical assistance in European countries.

Waste glass bottle crusher for hotels, bars, etc.
A UK SME has developed a machine that crushes waste glass bottles, etc. thus saving space and making the collection process more efficient. The machine is not large: size is 750 mm x 750 mm x 1780 mm. Several bottles can be fed into the machine at the same time. After being broken, the glass falls into a unique steel wheelie-bin that holds 300 kg and is compatible with all major brands of refuse collection vehicles. The company is looking to license the technology, or seeks a manufacturer.
