Local authorities push for greener waste rules

A pro-recycling association of European local government bodies has called for more ambitious EU waste policies in a statement adopted in mid-May. ACR+ is demanding: no change to the existing EU five-tier hierarchy of waste management options; creation of a clear definition of waste prevention to strengthen its place at the top of the hierarchy; a clear definition also of reuse backed by legal protection for product reuse industries; EU rules on recycling processes, and a specific directive on biowaste. Sino-U.S. program waste managment in China launched

A Sino-U.S. program was launched in Beijing Monday for enhanced cooperation on the prevention, management and treatment of hazardous and solid wastes in China, in a bid to reduce their impact on human health and ecosystems. The joint initiative, dubbed the "Strategy for Hazardous and Solid Waste Cooperation", was adopted during a meeting between Zhou Shengxian, head of China's State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA), and his U.S. counterpart Stephen Johnson.

PPS Installing Glass Recycling Unit in Europe

PPG Industries has installed a $1.6-million unit to recycle waste fiberglass at its fiberglass manufacturing plant in Hoogezand, the Netherlands. The investment will enable the plant to recycle more than 90 percent of its waste fiberglass, enabling PPG to conserve raw materials and avoid landfill costs. The facility recycles fiberglass through two melting furnaces at the manufacturing plant, according to Vicki Holt, PPG’s senior vice president, glass and fiber glass.


China: Calls for 'Green Packaging' to Protect Environment

China is working to develop "green packaging" as part of its efforts to build an environmentally friendly society, Vice Premier Zeng Peiyan said yesterday. He said this while referring to the vast growth of packaging waste at the World Packaging Conference, which opened in Beijing yesterday. "The huge increase in packaging waste has become a worldwide problem that deserves great attention," Zeng said. He added that China's packaging industry is concerned about environmental protection and resource conservation. Zeng called for additional efforts to be made to promote green packaging by developing waste-recycling technologies and using biodegradable materials.

The Northwest Product Stewardship Council has released a report that provides a conceptual business plan for how an industry-managed Third Party Organization can be established to oversee electronics recycling systems in multiple states. The report, entitled "Conceptual Business Plan for an Electronic Product Stewardship Third Party Organization (TPO)," is the result of a collaborative project of the Northwest Product Stewardship Council and Washington State Department of Ecology.

Low Temperature Conversion (LTC) - a revolutionary energy and fuel production process from organic wastes, biomass or brown coal
An Austrian SME has developed a patented process for converting waste materials like used tyres, sewage sludge, household waste or differently brown-coal by thermo catalytic decomposition into biogas or biofuel with very high energy density. The process is characterised by enormous flexibility concerning input and output materials, low working temperatures, and no toxic gases or hazardous waste arising. A Hungarian SME offers PVC waste recycling technology, producing soft insulating films for the construction industry. The technology enables the manufacturing of building insulation films from the wastes of plastic insulations of electric cables. Thickness of the film: 0.25 - 1.5 mm, width: maximum 150 cm. A Greek technical university has developed an innovative technology for production of high-added-value products by geopolymerisation of aluminosilicate solids, materials and industrial wastes. Modular waste incineration plant with reduced flue gas cleaning residues
A German research institute has developed a modular incineration plant that can be flexibly adapted to changes and is ready to enable to energetically utilise different refuse derived fuels directly on site. Applications are in power, heat or process steam generation. Flue gas cleaning residues are reduced to a minimum. New process for destruction of organic wastes and animal flours
A French laboratory has developed a new process for oxidative destruction of organic wastes. It is a low-temperature wet process that can be successfully applied to animal flours. A patent has been applied for, and the lab is interested in license agreements. (Ref: 06 FR FMMT 0FCT - 22/05/2006)
