Local authorities push for greener waste rules
01/06/2006
(endseuropedaily.com)
A pro-recycling association of European local government bodies has
called for more ambitious EU waste policies in a statement adopted in
mid-May. ACR+ is demanding: no change to the existing EU five-tier
hierarchy of waste management options; creation of a clear definition
of waste prevention to strengthen its place at the top of the
hierarchy; a clear definition also of reuse backed by legal
protection for product reuse industries; EU rules on recycling
processes, and a specific directive on biowaste.

"The huge increase in packaging waste has become a worldwide problem
that deserves great attention," Zeng said.
He added that China's packaging industry is concerned about
environmental protection and resource conservation.
Zeng called for additional efforts to be made to promote green
packaging by developing waste-recycling technologies and using
biodegradable materials.

Vynil 2010 is the legal entity that provides the organisational structure and financial resources to implement the European PVC industry's Voluntary Commitment.
Detailed research on EU waste markets, completed in 2005, indicates that Vinyl 2010 is the principal initiative for waste collection and recycling not governed by EU legislation. However, these studies also supplied evidence that the quantities of PVC waste that is both available and collectable is substantially lower than estimated at the start of the programme in 2000

Recycling waste paper to paper foam
A small German company is active in environmental technology sector since 1995. The company has developed a technology to produce paper foam out of renewable resources like waste paper & starch. The paper foam can be used for various applications. Used as loose fillings to protect goods or moulded packaging material it can substitute conventional oil-based products & offers superior ecological properties. The company is looking for licensees for this promising way of waste paper recycling. (Ref: TO-AM-011 - 26/05/2006)
Low Temperature Conversion (LTC) - a revolutionary energy and fuel production process from organic wastes, biomass or brown coal
An Austrian SME has developed a patented process for converting waste materials like used tyres, sewage sludge, household waste or differently brown-coal by thermo catalytic decomposition into biogas or biofuel with very high energy density. The process is characterised by enormous flexibility concerning input and output materials, low working temperatures, and no toxic gases or hazardous waste arising. Partners in energy and waste business are sought for licensing, production or distribution. (Ref: 06 AT ATCA 0FAS - 24/05/2006)
