South Africa: E-waste Recycling Project

The international interest group eWASA (electronic Waste Association of South Africa) lobbies for consumer education and improved recycling of electronic waste. Under its auspices the Green e-Waste Channel as established in 2005. Two service providers of the network operate a successful project in Cape Town: At a collection point all types of electronic waste are accepted and repaired or used for spare parts and recycled. Useable components are sold, refurbished devices go to charitable organisations. Three sorters are employed on a full-time basis. They receive ongoing training to improve their skills. The project partners keep detailed records of waste collected that can be fed into waste information systems in the province and at a national level. Educational programmes are offered and workshops have been conducted to over 250 learners from schools in the surrounding areas. The South African project is one of three worldwide with the goal of developing decentralised business models in the area of e-waste, which create jobs and alleviate poverty along the lines of the Basel Convention

United States: Steel Can Recycling Increases in 2005

Wastewater treatment and recycle in the processes of wet textile dyeing
An Italian research Centre has developed an innovative process to treat wastewaters from textile dyeing, based on a physical-chemical treatment and an ultra-filtration technology utilising flat membranes. The technologies are applied in a pre-industrial scale prototype and allow partial reuse of treated wastewater during the production cycle. The centre is looking for partners interested in the realisation of full scale plants for applications in the textile and in other industrial sectors.
